Name: Travis Poole

Job: Grill cook, trainer at Beasley's + Chuck's

Hometown: Greensboro, North Carolina

How long have you worked at the Cornershop? 11 months

Favorite team memory?

I really loved the AC Restaurants holiday party. I knew that Ashley [Christensen] was a fun person, but that night was when I really understood the company philosophy of "work hard, play hard"--she made an ice luge out of a giant block of ice and then poured shots for anyone who wanted one. That was great.

What do you like about your job?

The atmosphere, the people. I like coming in on Saturdays, it’s really busy, everyone’s on point, working as a team. We joke around, but everyone knows the limit and when to get to work.

When you’re not working, you’re probably….

Hanging out with my brother and sister. And bowling. I’ve been bowling a lot lately.

What would you tell a visitor to do while in Raleigh?

I'd definitely suggest that they walk around downtown, maybe hit the Museum of Science. And go to an NC State football game!

What’s your favorite thing on the menu?

At Beasley’s, the chicken biscuit; the Spirit Animal at Chuck’s; and anything with bourbon at Fox.

Your secret talent is?

I love to make people laugh.

Name: Tal Collins

Job: Barback & Server at Fox Liquor

Hometown: Atkinson, New Hampshire

How long have you worked at the Cornershop? 5 months

What do you like about your job? I like that the people who work here really care about that craft that goes into the cocktails, and the service that we provide to our guests. This is my first job in hospitality, and I like that I work at a place that cares on a deeper level.

When you’re not working, you’re probably...Downtown, drinking with friends at various restaurants and bars. I also like to play and dabble in game development.

What would you tell a visitor to do while in Raleigh? After hitting up Fox, visit some of the other great cocktail bars—Foundation, C Grace, Haymaker, for example.

What’s your favorite thing on the menu? I love the Duke of Paraguay (no longer on the menu, but still available on request). On the current menu, the Pomeranian.

Your secret talent is? Right after moving here I got into making homemade ice cream, and work has influenced that, so I’ve started adding booze to my ingredients list. My favorite is extremely simple, but also so delicious—brown sugar, maple syrup, rum.

Name: Richie Cook

Job: Bartender at Fox

Hometown: Raleigh, NC

How long have you worked at the Cornershop? 1 year (before that I was at Death & Taxes)

Favorite team memory? One night, the entire staff of a bar in Winston Salem came down, and we spent the night talking with them about drinks and hospitality—it was cool to see this general interest in bettering the industry, and that other bartenders were using Fox as a model.

What do you like about your job? I love making cocktails that are unique, that offer a new experience. It’s always exciting coming in to work—being able to nerd out on cocktails with the other bartenders, bounce ideas off each other, learn new things.

When you’re not working, you’re probably...Reading cocktail books (right now I’m really into vermouth, so reading a bunch about that, how it’s changed over time, how it varies between cultures), or playing video games (Overwatch, currently).

What would you tell a visitor to do while in Raleigh? I'd tell them to stop by all the local cocktail joints, spots like Gallo Pelon and Foundation...we have lots of great bartenders and talent around Raleigh, and everyone has a different experience to offer.

What’s your favorite thing on the menu? My current favorite drink at Fox is the Grimm and Bear it—it's fruity, bitter, and boozy all at once, and hits so many aspects of your palate. Upstairs at Beasley's, I get what I like to call the Fatboy Bowl: I order the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, but sub in fried chicken for meatloaf and add shredded cheese. [Editor's note: DANG!]

Your secret talent is? I do graphic and web design on the side.

Favorite team memory? The first time I ever met [Ashley Christensen], I was so incredibly intimidated. She sat down at the bar, and it feIt like meeting a celebrity--I was so nervous. But she's the most down to earth person ever.

What do you like about your job? Being behind the bar, you meet all kinds of people. I love that. And the team here are the best I've ever worked with in any job I've ever had; it's a family.

When you’re not working, you’re probably….traveling, or working on something creative. I majored in art in college. In my free time, I love to paint, refurbish furniture, make things. I'd love to make it into a career someday.

What would you tell a visitor to do while in Raleigh? Eat! We have the best food scene in Raleigh. The farmer's market is a necessary stop. I also love Umstead Park.

What’s your favorite thing on the menu? Veggie sandwich, with a side of the roasted beets.

Your secret talent is? I love to garden; I like to think I have a green thumb.

Favorite team memory? The day that Henry Winkler came in for lunch--we were flipping out that The Fonz was eating with us. Even just getting to see him from the kitchen was awesome!

What do you like about your job? I like the familial environment. Everyone looks out for each other, encourages each other. I’ve never had that anywhere that I’ve worked, it's a blessing.

When you’re not working, you’re probably….playing music. Any free time I have is spent practicing and performing with my band. We're called Essex Muro and we play punk rock.

What would you tell a visitor to do while in Raleigh? I'd tell them to go to Poole's Diner for dinner, then hit some of the museums in the area. I love the NC History Museum and the Museum of Natural Science.

What’s your favorite thing on the menu? I usually order the veggie sandwich, but add fried chicken thigh.

Your secret talent is? I know a lot of facts about music and movies--I could talk about it for hours.
