Reopening Update!

Pooleside Pies © Lauren V. Allen

We are excited to announce that we are gearing up to reopen the dining rooms of Poole’s Diner, Poole’side Pies, Beasley’s, and Death & Taxes in mid April! Exact reopening dates for each restaurant to come soon!

We will be reopening gradually, with limited services to start, and will build back to a full schedule for dine-in service in stages.

We have been operating in a take-out only model since March 2020, to try to mitigate the risk of infection for staff and guests during the pandemic. We have made the decision to reopen based on the reduction in community spread; and access to vaccinations for our staff, and an increasing percentage of the public.

We are SO excited to reopen! We truly have missed you. That said, we ask for your understanding in that we will continue to enforce limited capacity restrictions and follow CDC guidelines surrounding mask-wearing, and will be requiring you to do the same while in our spaces. We will be building back gradually to ensure an incredible experience for everyone. We appreciate your patience and understanding—we’re almost there!

Try a sommelier’s favorite wine selections

Continuing onward into the second month of 2020, we’ve got an incredible month of magnums for you to try at Marrow Magnum Mondays at Death & Taxes.

This month, in honor of her birthday, our beverage director, Cappie Peete has a treat in store for us. All of the selections are personal favorites of hers, meaning you’ll get the chance to try the favorite selections of one of Raleigh’s most incredible sommeliers.

On February 3rd, we started our month of magnums with Roland Lavantureux Chablis Vieilles Vignes. This selection has ripe, exotic fruit aromas and ample lingering richness that will pair perfectly with our marrow to start while still being bold enough to match our fish, shrimp, and even pork entrees.

On February 10th, we’ll feature Hirsch San Andreas Fault Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast. Hirsch Vineyards is one of Cappie’s favorite producers of Pinor Noir. The San Andreas Fault pinot noir, so named because the Hirsch vineyard lies just half a mile from the faultline, is their flagship wine and has fruit from 28 distinct farming blocks within their multifaceted vineyard. This vintage is characterized by charming red fruit, supple tannins, and a juicy fruit character.

On February 17th, we are featuring Agnes & Rene Mosse Moussamoussettes Pet Nat Rosé. This vibrant and flavorful pet nat is from the Loire Valley in France, one of Cappie’s all-time favorite wine regions.  Agnes & René Mosse make this rejuvenating wine that is bursting with red berry fruit flavor, yet is still totally dry. It is lip-smacking, delicious and too fun to miss.

On February 24th, we’ll finish off our magnum month with Domaine Chapel Charbonnieres Fleurie France. Notes of raspberry, red currants, and fresh herbs dominate this juicy fruit-forward wine. This young domaine, founded by husband and wife team - David Chapel and Michele Chapel-Smith, is making waves across Beaujolais.  The old vine Gamay plantings in the Charbonnieres vineyard of Fleurie combined with their meticulous attention to detail in the cellar yields this beautiful wine.

You’ll be drinking delicious wines this month, all the favorites of an incredible sommelier. Make your Monday reservation(s) here.

Wrapping up the year with Italian Piedmont Reds

We are closing out the year with a focus on red wines from the Piedmont region of Italy, one of the top wine regions of Italy and arguably the world.  The Piedmont is dynamic wine region producing many different styles of wine from a myriad of native varieties. We’ll be celebrating this varietal for our Marrow Magnum Mondays all month-long in December at Death & Taxes

What’s Marrow Magnum Monday? Each Monday, our beverage director Cappie Peete picks a different magnum of wine to offer by the glass. The magnum picks are organized by a monthly theme, giving you a chance to do a deep dive into a region or style by trying wines in large format.

On December 2nd, we featured Paitin "Sori Paitin" Barbaresco.  Paitin is one of the oldest wineries in Barbaresco, founded in 1796, and the current vintages of their wines are superb examples of focused, elegant, traditional Barbaresco. Their "Sori Paitin" is produced from their renowned old vine parcel with the famous Serraboella cru. It is a beautifully complex wine that showcases the spicy, floral and savory flavors that can all come from the Nebbiolo grape.

On December 9th, we featured Vietti "Perbacco" Langhe Nebbiolo. Vietti winery is owned by the family's fourth generation. This family is responsible for several monumental winemaking concepts in the area, such as making single vineyard wines and putting the grape variety Arneis on the world wine map.  This exceptional wine drinks like a world-class Barolo but for a fraction of the price.

On December 16th, our selection will be Marziano Abbona "Rinaldi" Barbera d'Alba.  This selection is a wine from the lesser-known but certainly not less delicious grape, Barbera.  The full line up of wines from the Abbona estate consistently possess a certain factor that keeps us coming back for more.  The same amount of care goes into every wine they make, and that shines through this juicy, spicy and blue-fruited wine.

On December 23rd, our selection will be Nervi-Conterno Gattinara. We are venturing further north in the Piedmont region to Gattinara for this week’s selection. Nervi is the oldest winery in Gattinara that is still producing wine and it was recently purchased by the legendary Conterno family. This wine, made from the Nebbiolo grape, boasts layered aromas of violets, orange peel, smoke, licorice and loads of ripe cherries.

On December 30th, our selection is G. D. Vajra Albe Barolo. We are closing out this year with one of our favorite wineries and a tribute to local tradition in Barolo.  G. D. Vajra continues to raise the bar, and "Albe" is a true Barolo di Barolo which means they have blended fruit from three different vineyards sites all within the Barolo commune.  Each fruit has different southern exposures and add distinct qualities to the wine. The result is a complex and rich Barolo that will age gracefully for another three to five years!

See a wine that you simply cannot miss? Reserve your table here.
